*UPDATED* No Answers, Big Headache
That wasn't exactly my favorite Lost episode.
My word, that was confusing. The episodes that have to do with Desmond always are, it seems (remember the creepy white-haired woman and the monastery from last season?) I'm not even sure what to say about it except...
My word, that was confusing.
(But wasn't the phone conversation between Desmond and Penny the sweetest thing ever? Gotta love a Lost love story.)
That's all I have to say about that. Your thoughts?
*UPDATED TO ADD* I think there's something to this Michael/Walt theory several of you raised. Think about it--those two left the island without knowing where they're going, right? So they almost certainly veered into the time warp. Either they got picked up on the ship, or they're floating out there in "lost" time. MAYBE THIS IS WHY WALT KEEPS REAPPEARING ON THE ISLAND. That just almost makes sense!

So funny. I just looked over at my husband and said, "either they need to have another show to decipher the show that just aired or I have to stop watching because I'm getting a headache!"

I'm not up to date on Lost but my son watch it.

I loved that episode, but I always have been partial to Des. I really like the addition of Faraday to the cast and think he's an intriguing character. Methinks Michael is the "friend" they have on the boat who let them out of the sick bay.

Oh, and wasn't it interesting that Penny's father bought a painting of The Black Rock, the ship that ended up on the island, and that was apparently formerly owned by the Hanso Foundation?

Yeah, it didn't do much for me. I'm not digging this whole time travel bit. I hope they make more out of it than they are so far. Looks like next week will be more back to, um, "normal" ;)
But, did you notice the painting they were showing during the auction was of a ship named, "The Black Rock?" Interesting.
Also, looks like Conrad Eckley wasn't getting enough air time on CSI, so he jumped ship to um, the Lost ship lol.

I'm digging the time travel thing, and yes, the Black Rock picture and journal at auction was well-placed.
I have to say that one of my fave things about Lost is how the plotweb runs amok one episode only to get tied back together a few shows later.
The writing is SUPERB!!
Can't wait to find Walt again...
:)

This is such a good show!! I am completely confused, too, but I love Daniel's character. And you're right--Penny & Des' phone conversation was completely precious. :)

WOW. I LOVED this one. :) I'm concerned, though. Didn't the rat get a bloody nose right before it met its demise? I thought if Des contacted his "constant" he was safe. Apparently that isn't the case because his nose was bleeding while on the phone. Hrm.
But aw... Penny loves him and has been looking for him for 3 years! "It was enough" he says. I love that character!

really!?! i have to say i thought that was one of THE episodes! time travel, time distortion has been such a huge theory for so long i felt like we were finally getting an answer! and yes, i LOVED the happy ending when Des got to talk to his Penn! i hope we find out next week who Ben's spy is on the boat. i think Daniel Faraday is a very intriguing character and can't wait to learn more about him. i was riveted the entire time!

They just linked the older islanders (Desmond was not on the plane) with the new arrivals. That scientist has to find Desmond in the past and presnt. I love this stuff.

I didn't think it was confusing at all. Loved this episode! But I am partial to Desmond. I could listen to him read the phone book.
I was wondering if Faraday was having some of the same trouble that people have when coming to the island -- last episode he was having trouble remembering cards that Charlotte turned over for him, so he's been affected somehow -- and his note that Desmond was his constant seemed to confirm that.
He asked Desmond if he had been exposed to radiation or electro-magnetism, which he was when the hatch blew up. And Faraday had been exposed to radiation in his experiments with Eloise. So that somehow seems to predispose people to having trouble in whatever the time warp is between the freighter and the island (in the last episode Faraday had a payload sent to the island, and the clock on it and on his equipment were 30 minutes apart). Then again it may have something to do with the pilot veering off the bearing that Faraday told him to come in on -- I think Faraday said 35, but it showed the pilot's dashboard saying between 30 and 33.
What we don't know is why there is a time warp or whatever between the freighter's location and the island.
Commenting on TracyMichele's comment -- Des was safe because he did contact his constant in time. I'm assuming the rat had a shorter time between his nose bleeding and death because he was smaller -- and Desmond's having a bit more time was due to his larger frame.
And I just thought of something -- Rousseau used to talk about everyone on her ship coming down with a sickness. I wonder if it was this same thing?
I did love the conversation with Desmond and Penny! I hope they make it! It would be so nice if somebody's love story did!!

I'm with you, my head hurts. The hubby loved it though. It was a little too sci fi for my taste. I do love the Desmond, Penny thing, but I feel like I am more lost than ever!

It's just coming on here, so thanks for the heads up! I'll be sure to TiVo it in case I need to rewatch it, in order to catch every clue and nuance...
Or just to frustrate myself needlessly.

I loved this episode. I felt like we finally had some threads tied together, a few answers.
And I've been thinking the same thing about Rousseau's people, Barbara.
I am not a sci-fi kind of girl, but I really did like this episode.
It also makes me wonder if Desmond running into Jack in the stadium way back when was Desmond time-traveling on purpose.
Many more thoughts jumbling around in my head, but yeah -- I really liked tonight's show.

He found his constant! Penny! Great episode. It did make my head hurt but I do love me some LOST.

um. can I just say this lost series is facinating and frustrating all in the same blink and breath?
I think the "spy" on the boat is the little girl that gave ben the dolls remember? She met Ben at orientation with candy and they were best friends.
Ben as an adult still has the dolls and treasures them, and I think he stashed her away before he helped gas the island.
Time travel is a little confusing but it does layer the plot and keep it interesting.
I can't stand the wait.
Did the person who slashed all the wires and cut communication from the boat also open the door for Desmond and Siede to escape?

I love Lost this season! I just wrote a blog Haiku about it even. HA!
I think Desmond's time travel thing appeals to me because I loved the book, The Time Traveler's Wife, which is similar to this story line. I find D so darn interesting.
I told my husband, when they finish this whole show up, I think they should dedicate a full season to putting all of these pieces together for each character. So, each episode would tell the full story, chronologically correct, for each character from beginning to end.
Only THEN, will we ever fully put the pieces together, I bet! HA!

OK- I'm back after having watched the episode and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. (Disclaimer- I AM a bit of a sci-fi geek...)
I thought that it was interesting that Penny's dad gave Desmond her address (remember how much he hated Desmond when he wanted to marry Penny?) Was Penny's dad also bidding on the painting? Does he know something?
Also this wasn't the first episode where Desmond has jumped in time. Wasn't there something about that last season?
So glad it's back- can't wait for the next episode!

I loved it. I'm not entirely sure what's going on, but I still loved it. I love Desmond and really like Faraday. And Sayid. Lost is really rocking this season.

OK, what I got from this episode is that it's not just a time-traveling issue. It's an alternate reality issue. The Oceanic 6 are the only ones who really survived the crash. Anyone else from the crash who tries to leave the island ceases to exist. Lock has figured that out; that's why he's never wanted to leave the island and why he's afraid the people on the boat are coming to harm them. That's also why the asian helicopter guy (sorry I can't remember his name) told Kate, "Just stay here on the island. Who knows, maybe you didn't survive the crash." Anyway, the more I think about this theory, the more pieces fall into place for me. Or maybe I'm completely wrong again.

That's funny because I said to my husband last night after the show that I felt like we finally had a whole episode with answers! Even though time travel isn't much of an answer but there always has been some speculation that some sort of time warp was going on. I'm glad they didn't drag Desmond's "sickenss" out over tonnes of episodes and we found out what was happening rather quickly. I thought it was a satisfying compared to the two previous that I thought were a tad boring.
And i to loved that Des got to talk to Penny and she still loves him! yay!
And I love commenter Barbara H's rememberance of what Rousseau said about everyone coming down with "the sickness" and hey maybe that's why there was quarantine on the island? They didn't know what was happening to everyone. Maybe that's why the observation stations were there and maybe that's why they were doing experiments on polar bears and stuff... Maybe not :)

I LOVED it... I know it sounds crazy but I too felt like they were finally giving us some answers. It was hard to follow at times, and my husband went a little bonkers with his new theories on what was going on, but I thought the whole show was great. I also think Michael is the "friend" on the boat... and Des and Penny's phone conversation was awesome!

I love this show! I can't remember the last time a show had me so wrapped up. Like the last person said - I felt liek we were getting answers, even if they weren't the answers we've been waiting for. So I loved this episode (and seeing foxy Sayid never hurts, either)

I just love this show. I think Desmond might be my new favorite character, since Charlie had to die (and I'm still quite sad about that). His phone conversation with Penny got me all choked up. Interesting thought, that Michael was the friend on the boat...have to ponder that awhile.
Did you notice that when Desmond went to meet Mr. Widmore at the auction, the item up for bid was a ledger from the Black Rock - the ship that's wrecked on the island? And the auctioneer said the ledger had only been in the possession of the Hanso foundation - aren't they the ones that started Dharma? And now Mr. Widmore owns the ledger...
