*Spoiler alert! If you don't want to know what happens, don't read any further!*
This morning I was catching up on the ABC Official Lost Podcast, and the two writers/producers explained that a theme for this season is going to be resurrection.
Well, yes, I should say so.
John Locke has gotten himself back to the island and is just as alive and kickin' as he can possibly be, and that's after he has been very clearly murdered by--OH MY STARS--Benjamin Linus. So it would appear that a sure formula for becoming undead is to have Jack Shepherd load up your body in a coffin and fly over the ocean. First Christian, now John. I'm detecting a theme.
(And for the record, let me just restate my theory that all the Losties who have died are going to somehow become undead by the series finale. You heard it here first, folks, except that everyone else is saying it too, so maybe you heard it here 37th.)
Tonight's episode shed some real light. It seems to be becoming very clear that the conflict at the center of the show is Ben Linus vs. Charles Widmore. Tonight, for the first time, I found myself viewing Charles Widmore differently, wondering if might not be evil incarnate after all. It appears that Ben Linus has duped us all. Or maybe the Lost writers have duped us all, and tonight's Nasty Ben episode was a red herring to throw us off. Maybe Widmore is the bad guy. Or maybe Ben and Widmore are both bad guys, and this is the Battle Of the Bad Guys, and John Locke is going to ultimately smack them both.
Of significance tonight was the return of (oh, my heart!) WALT! I love how John couldn't bring himself to ask Walt to go back. "The boy's been through enough," he said. That was a great Lost moment. I have been wondering about Walt--certainly at one point he seemed like a very important character with "special" abilities (remember the birds who smashed themselves into the building?) I've heard so many people speculate that the Lost writers will not be able to wrap every single loose end, and I've worried that the Walt storyline might remain unaddressed. Hopefully tonight would indicate otherwise.
I'm eager to get back to the Eloise Hawking story (and incidentally, here's an interesting side question-- what if Widmore is Daniel Faraday's father? Widmore and Eloise were on the island at the same time, remember?) Why did Ben seem so especially startled when John mentioned Eloise's name?
There are still endless question, but a few pieces are snapping into place. The previews indicated that next week may be a real whopper of an episode. In my opinion, this is by far Lost's best season--do you agree?
