Remember, there are some new rules in town...please read through these guidelines before leaving your link!
No time for an overly brilliant tip today--I'm up to eyeballs in wallpaper glue. It seems like I'm always printing out maps off the internet to the kids' friends' houses, or new stores, etc. etc. I'm directionally-challenged, so from one trip to the next I will often forget exactly where these places are. And if Hubs has to pick up a child at a sleepover and relies on ME for directions?...well, Heaven help us. So, I've started saving these printed out maps in a little folder, and I keep it in my mini-van, with each map labeled as to what it's for. It's like my own little collection of Frequently Visited Places. Very handy.
If you have a Works-For-Me Wednesday tip, leave your link below. Remember to add a 3-4 word summary after your name--as in, Shannon (keeping maps) or Jules (enchilada recipe), etc.
Great idea. Mine are usually just crammed in the glove box. I definitely need to organize them!

Good idea. Our glove box is too small to hold much. Might have to try the notebook idea.
Posted by: PastorMac's Ann | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 12:26 AM
Sorry. Totally missed putting the summary. If there was a way to delete the first name I would.
Posted by: Susanne | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 12:28 AM
That is actually a great idea. My husband has to meet with clients frequently for his job, and he often has to call me at home because he forgets to print out the directions. I should get a binder together for him and stick directions in it by last name. Then, when he has follow-up meetings, he'll have the map right there already!
Posted by: the "other" Sarah | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 12:29 AM
I have a tendency to throw my printed out maps away, only to have to reprint them again the next time we travel there. I'll have to start saving them.
I've posted a WFMW tip as well. :)

My ever organized hubby keeps up on this for us...very handy!
Blessings.

ours are all jumbled into the back of the front seat. mine should be so lucky as yours!
Posted by: HolyMama! | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 01:16 AM
Great idea!
I have a little question, though. Would Chilihead and her ilk tell us that the abbreviation for Frequently Visited Places would be pronounced: "fuhvup" Or would she possibly conced to "eff vee pee?"... I'm omly askin'...
Posted by: Kelly | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 01:26 AM
I've been pinned.
Or I participated in my first WFMW. :D
Posted by: Cheri | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 01:33 AM
oh and I totally do that with driving directions and maps. I put them in the clear page protectors (cause NOTHING says nerd like a clear page protector) and they stay nice and spiffy. :D
Posted by: Cheri | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 01:42 AM
that is a great idea! i print out a lot of those maps too, but I just throw them out.
Posted by: Janice | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 03:31 AM
Ha! That's going to be very good idea for when Munchkin gets a bit older and needs chauffeuring around!
Posted by: Mieneke | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 03:35 AM
I need to do this as well.
Posted by: Mary Ann | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 05:24 AM
Good idea. I've been known to print off maps repeatedly because I don't save them...
Posted by: Katrina | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 05:34 AM
I can't ever remember exactly how to get to places I rarely go. If I was much of a driver, I swear I'd buy one of those GPS systems.
And wow--it's barely 7 a.m. (EDT) and I'm poster 29!!!
Posted by: mom2fur | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 06:10 AM
Great idea - if I ever went anywhere!! ;D
Posted by: Faith | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 06:32 AM
Hey ... that's a great idea!! I'll have to remember that as I am constantly doing the same. Thanks for sharing!
Posted by: Heather | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 06:34 AM
Great idea. Sort of like your own personal Mapsco. I use maps all the time, because I am directionally challenged, and can't remember from one time to the next how to get where I am going.
What time do y'all get up? It's 6:33 here in Texas, and I'm #33!
Posted by: Jan | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 06:34 AM
I think it's a good idea! Happy Wednesday ;).
Posted by: MamaDuck | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 06:39 AM
Great idea. I always print off the maps, or satelite views. But to keep them in the car is a GREAT idea. Check out my WFMW. It's about Susie at Bluebird blogs!
Posted by: Gina | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 06:50 AM
I really, really like the new rules but I gotta tell ya I was stumped on a short title to put next to my name! *giggles sheepishly*
But what I just realized I did was, link to my main page, on that 'auto link thingee' above rather than as requested in #3 in the guidelines. I really appreciated the person who explained 'permalink' and want to give them a million dollars. I will endeavor to get it right next week. I have made a list of tips to use for the next 3 or 4 months and am excited about sharing them and seeing what all everyone has for tips.
My question is...does anyone have a good way to save/refer back or otherwise keep track of all these wonderful tips? I am thinking I will need to make a spreadsheet or at the very least a word document to keep track of the really great ones. There have been a few and I thought I would remember them but alas, that is not the case.
Thank you for thinking of this. It's an exceptional idea as you can tell by it's success!!!
Have a fabulous and hint-filled Wednesday.
Pam

Awesome idea for maps...I definitely need those handy directions often.
Posted by: Code Yellow Mom | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 07:07 AM
I've tried my link twice and it says "delete link" after it...? What am I not doing quite right?
Posted by: Code Yellow Mom | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 07:10 AM
What are you talking about? Yesterday you said, and I quote:
"My own little tip will be particularly lame"
That was a FABULOUS tip. Good one girl!
Posted by: Heth | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 07:25 AM
I do something very similar except I don't keep it in the car. Duh! How much better would that be?!
Thanks!
Posted by: lady laura | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 08:02 AM
Ok, so would you call that folder ... the FVP or "eff-vee-pee" or "Fe-vee-pee" or ...
hmmm. Brain hurts again.
Posted by: Kelli | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 08:09 AM
So smart - and saving the planet, too. I'm over here wasting paper printing the directions out AGAIN. Great job, and thanks so much for hosting. You totally rock!
Posted by: Katherine | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 08:11 AM
Happy Wednesday Everybody!
Posted by: blestwithsons | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 08:14 AM
Yeah, I'm with you, Shannon. Kind of lame.
Where's the challenge in that? I *like* wandering around a strange neighborhood, looking for a house that seems vaguely familiar. And that little rush when you knock on the door, hoping that you got the right one. It's a lot like when you dial a phone number from memory and hope you got it right.
Ahh, the little thrills that add spice to the life of a housewife.
;)

I love it!
Mine is up!
Posted by: Maria | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 08:42 AM
Isn't MINI-van a contradiction in terms?
Posted by: Kim | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 08:44 AM
I do something similar, except with written directions that people have given me. I know I'll never remember how to get someplace for the next time, so I put them all in a file and look them up when I need to go somewhere. But I had never thought of keeping them in my car instead of in my filing cabinet.
Btw, this is my first WFMW, did I do something wrong that it shows "delete link" next to mine? (homemade skin moisturizer, etc.) I checked it and it works, so I don't know!
Posted by: Shannon | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 08:45 AM
I do that, too. Very handy. :)
Posted by: stephanie | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 08:48 AM
My second post, not a newbie anymore. Can't wait for Wednesdays, now!
Posted by: Joni | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 08:55 AM
Happy Wednesday!
I know my picture could be better, but I like the idea so much I wanted to share it anyway.
Can't wait to check out the rest!
Posted by: Rebecca Mielke | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 08:57 AM
I really like that idea! I always print out maps from mapquest or expedia for different places and end up losing them when I need the directions again. I never even thought to label them and keep them in my car!
Also, I love that I found this blog. I cannot wait to check out everyone's ideas. I know that I wrote down a bunch of the ideas last wekk so I am sure I will do the same this week.
Thanks!

I love this map idea!! Very cool!!
Posted by: Stacey | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 09:06 AM
That is a great idea, Shannon. SuperHubby has a file in the filing cabinet for our mapquest maps, but we should probably be keeping them in the van instead.
Posted by: Goslyn | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 09:10 AM
Thats a great idea! That way your maps are always on hand!
Posted by: Nikkie | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 09:22 AM
Great idea Shannon!
Thanks for hosting this, today was my first and it's alot of fun!
Posted by: Heidi | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 09:22 AM
Not lame, great idea! As I am somewhat of a "tree hugger" I like not throwing away all that paper. :)
Posted by: Elizabeth | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 09:27 AM
I love it! I'm so addicted to google maps (the zooming, the satelite imagery, the google-ness of it all!)
Thanks Shannon. Great tip from a gracious host.
Posted by: GranolaGirl | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 09:43 AM
That's a great idea! I'll have to remember that one.
I found your site via GiBee. I love it!! This Works For Me is a fantastic idea. I can't wait to read through them all.

Great idea! I like it!

Thanks for hosting such a great resource. Good luck on the leatherish wallpaper. We are currently redoing the kitchen and I can't even decide on colorwashing colors!

Shannon, I love these WFMW tips and as a newbie blogger I'd love to join in. But this newbie needs all the technoblog "hep me, please" I can get. How do I add the banner? How do I link to the post and not the front page? How do I even email you (the default is not set? what's up with that?) rather than have to post all these ingenue questions in your comments? Ack! Either way, I'll keep reading. I love your blog--you are a kindred spirit! Thanks
Posted by: Lisa | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 10:25 AM
Hi Shannon,
Nice tip! I'm really enjoying being a part of WFMW! There's always at least one tip that I start using right away!
Posted by: Umm Skandar | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 10:36 AM
I'm a little bit confused. I just discovered WFMW last night and had the index page left open while I slept, so I could peruse the many blogs listed at my leisure. Well, today I accidentally refreshed the page and now there are less links than last night. Are you changing the index each week? I was thinking this index page was for all WFMW submissions you'd received since you started it. Oye, there were a lot of good ones from I guess last week (the list had 102 items on it) and now I'm not sure how to find them.
Posted by: Teresa | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 11:47 AM
I am VERY directionally challenged and even have 2 left over google maps in my van from yesterday's Kansas City trip to prove it.
Thanks!

Another great tip! Thanks!
Posted by: Anne | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 11:48 AM
I do the same thing! Of course, I'm not as organized about it, but I do shove them in the glove compartment.
I also do this for road trips. I have a folder with printed hotel reservations, maps, various cell phone numbers, stuff like that on it. Then when we get to where we're going, I can just whip it out, check us in to the hotel, and be on my way.
Posted by: Plain Jane Mom | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 12:36 PM
Great tip, Shannon!
Posted by: Jerri | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 12:37 PM
Great idea. I'm a bit visually challenged, so instead of the maps, I would be better off with the mapquest type directions in a folder.
Or, in my case, I just call my wife. (Where am I supposed to be Princess?)

I've been initiated! My first WFW!!

Hi, let me add myself to the throng saying "Great Idea, Shannon, and Thankyou!!!" I put my own idea in, but then I realized I didn't put what it was actually about....It's about laundry sorting. Anyway, thanks for the encouragement for a fellow housewife and busy mom. Keep up the good work, and God bless!
Posted by: Charity | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 03:29 PM
Oy, apologizing for not reading more carefully the guidelines. I put a corrected title in, sorry for the mixup!!
Posted by: Charity | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 03:36 PM
I do this, too. It got embarrassing asking for directions to the same places over and over, LOL. AND, it's cheaper than Onstar.
I'm just joining in on WFMW and I LOVE it, btw. Great blog! :)
Posted by: Cyndi | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 03:58 PM
Not sure why "delete link" keeps showing up. Is that because you're not seeing my post - - or is it because you don't want me to post here??
Posted by: jen3 | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 04:16 PM
I am "directionally-challenged" myself and I get lost every time I get in the car alone...I am not kidding and I have lived here my whole life lol But as you know that will change in a few days and this is a great idea! I will definitely use this! Now how about some moving half way across the country with 3 kids and 2 animals tips? :-D
Posted by: Barbie | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 06:42 PM
I'm always hunting for directions. Now I guess I need to get ink for my printer!
