We've sucked up every single ounce of living space in this house to the point that we've overflowed. We've now set up living space (or at least shoe-putting-on-space) outside our four walls. Next thing you know we'll have a sofa on the front porch, and then it's just a short trip to a Camaro up on blocks in the driveway.
I kid. We're much too high class to have a Camaro up on blocks. It would totally be a Honda.
No really, I kid. But not about overflowing our house--that's for real.
We've set up a little area just outside our garage door--kind of a "garage room", if you will--that serves as a staging ground for all our comings and goings. We've put down old rugs to make it feel more room-ish, and it's where the kids hang their backbacks, store their shoes, unload soccer equipment, etc. We've crammed in as much shelf space as is reasonable, making it a decent little addition to the house.
And while I know not everyone has a garage, if you do, this has proven to be a handy use of space for our family. Here's a picture:
Don't you love our wood paneling? We had that flown in special from 1982.

This is exactly what I have been wanting to do but have not had the time nor vision. I have a utility room as you enter our home from the garage but I really wanted a place for the 'download' before coming into the house. Your pictures give me vision. I was struggling with how I wanted it to look. This is great!

Thank you, Shannon. Great idea - love all the hooks for coats and backpacks.

We actually needed some extra space badly enough that we did a temporary conversion and turned 1/2 of our garage into a room for our teenage son. Since we live in CA- we don't really need the garage for parking and our son loves it!

I love this--so many people's staging areas look like they're straight out of Real Simple magazine, with Pottery Barn shelves and cute fabric containers for each child, matching backpacks neatly hung in a row under embroidered nametags. It's awakens organizational lust, I suppose, and it's so pretty and so unattainable to me, I just shrug and move on.
But this, this is real. This is a lineup of hooks tacked up in a garage. The rugs are a great touch. I could *do* this! In fact, I think I *will* do this!
Because I *can*. Thank you for letting us see something real. Something with paneling. I've got some just like it in my basement.
Posted by: Ann Kroeker | Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at 11:03 PM
I love those Pampers boxes. We use them for storage, too. Our garage looks like the Pampers warehouse, because every box is a Pampers box (sizes N - 5), with a label saying what's really in it. They're good, sturdy boxes, and they have handles. They're small enough that you can pack them full of books or paper and still lift them.
Real Simple and Pottery Barn can kiss our Pampers wearin' behinds! :)
Posted by: Amy | Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at 11:32 PM
That's not bad at all. In TX it was not uncommon at all for a garage to become a man cave. Several in our neighborhood had sectionals and flat screen tvs. (no kidding) Heh, and this was a nice neighborhood, where if anything *we* were bringing down the property value. :giggles: We had not outgrown our house but we had determined since my Suburban wouldn't fit in the garage-that we were going to make it more of a usable space with a crafting area/workout area and indoor playspace for rainy days. We however did not have paneling-that's enough to provoke jealousy right there. :)

That's perfect Shannon!
Posted by: Laura | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 12:03 AM
That's a great idea Shannon. You are knocking yourself but that is neat and effective and looks good. I use huggies and right now they're living a second life as packing boxes.
Posted by: Q&Q | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 12:04 AM
I love your idea - I think we're going to have to do something similar in our garage soon. We're overflowing the tiny landing which we enter the house from the garage into. What I wouldn't give for a real 'mud' room... Thanks for sharing! :)
Posted by: Deb - Mom of 3 Girls | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 12:07 AM
Why have I never thought of that?! GREAT IDEA!!! I have been trying to figure out how to put hooks and shelves in our teeny laundry room that you pass through to get to the garage!
Hubby is going to be busy this weekend! LOL
Posted by: Dawn | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 12:15 AM
We've often struggled to "multi-purpose" different areaas as well. I love this idea--and only wish we had an ATTACHED garage! :)
Posted by: Cindy | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 12:32 AM

Posted by: Gina | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 06:09 AM
This is my first ever Works for Me Wednesday! I'm so happy to be participating in it. Thank you for hosting :)
I've often considered closing in our porch with glass in order to maximize our front hall space! We have such a small front hall that we would really benefit from another place to keep our shoes.
Posted by: Multi-tasking Mommy | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 06:13 AM
This is a totally do-able idea that won't cost an arm and a leg after the holidays.

I should show this picture to my husband to at least give him an idea of what organization in a garage could look like! lol
Posted by: Heidi | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 06:45 AM
You posted a picture of your garage. And I don't want to run screaming from the chaos and claustrophobia. You're my new hero.
Posted by: chaotic joy | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 06:58 AM
We had a similar space, then we did a weekend construction project to take out a wall and add one to bring that space inside the house. We love having space for all that shoe and coat stuff! I should take photos and show that for a WFMW someime.
Posted by: Scot | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 06:58 AM
Great idea! The times we've lived without a basement have definitely required some creative thinking.

It's all about the panelling. I feel the vibe.
Posted by: Jacquelyn@Because I Said So! | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 07:12 AM
*sigh* what a lovely idea, if only I had a garage! The paneling is working for me! Makes it less likely to become messy I'll bet, because it looks neater to begin with than it would without it.
Posted by: Nadine | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 07:16 AM
Oh, if only we had room in our garage for an area like this!!! (It's too full of old toys, boxes of clothing for consignment, etc. We even manage to squeeze the van in sometimes!) Thanks for the tip, though. Maybe someday!
Posted by: Amy @ Hope Is the Word | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 07:23 AM
Did your kids really hang their bookbags and coats so neatly, or did you stage that photo?
If they cleaned up after themselves, do you want to trade kids for awhile until you teach mine to do that?

that wood paneling is kickin'!
Posted by: ames | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 07:43 AM
This is exactly what I want to do in our basement garage. My husband just finished framing the wall, so I am going to show him this picture!
BTW, your paneling makes me think of our first house we rented. Except it had the fake brick paneling, too!
Posted by: Sarah (Real Life) | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 07:54 AM
What a great idea! I think I'm going out today to buy a garage. Do you think they'll have any at TJMaxx???
Posted by: Jen | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 07:58 AM
Your "Garage Room" idea is in the works at my house. First we have to actually clean out the garage. ;) Thanks for the vision!

WOW! How tidy is that!?!
Posted by: Naomi | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 08:35 AM

You look very organized, BTW!!
Posted by: Beth | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 08:38 AM
We got some wood shelves from my in-laws and have done the same sort of thing. And our play area is right off the garage so this makes it extra handy!
Posted by: Kara | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 08:40 AM
We have shelves in our garage where I store extra paper goods like unopened toilet paper, Kleenex, trash bags, paper towels, ziplock bags, and extra canned goods. We go to Sams for things like that. It has helped a lot since we don't really have a pantry in our little house. Thanks for sharing.
Posted by: Tiffany | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 08:47 AM
I love how that looks, so organized! Good job. I wish we had a garage to do that in.
Posted by: S.B. | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 09:12 AM
My sister does the same thing. We would, but our garage is too tiny and not laid out in a way that would make it work for us.
Posted by: Devildogwife | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 09:25 AM
We are actually one of the few in our neighborhood who use our garage for a car!!
But we rent a house that is a bit too big for us and the living room is where we store things that should or could be ina garage or a basement if we had one.
Posted by: Tammy | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 10:28 AM
"Flown in from 1982."
HA! You slay me.
Since I live in The North (where it is slightly colder than outer space today), we've set up a similar area right inside our garage door. It's a wonderful containment area, and it keeps us semi-organized.
(Is that an entire crate full of water bottles on the white shelf by the way?!?)
Posted by: Kelly @ Love Well | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 10:39 AM
That's a great idea. Our entry way gets so cluttered, what with all the umpteen jackets my kids own (not to mention me and my husband), the shoes, the winter paraphernalia, etc. Mental note- mention this idea to my husband.
Thanks!
Posted by: Stephanie | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 10:50 AM
Been reading WFMW for awhile and finally decided to jump in too!
The garage area is such a good idea! If we ever have a garage, I am totally doing that.
Posted by: Tifany | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 11:00 AM
Thanks for this idea! I believe I will do something similar! I'm sure as soccer season approaches it will motivate me to make more room for all of our stuff!
Thanks for the picture to help give a visual as well! I'm already creating my own picture of what might work for us in my mind as well!!

You've got an outdoor{ish} mud room. Great use of space!
Posted by: Rebecca | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 12:55 PM
Great! We had the same, and it looked so nice, that one day one of the boys decided it would be his room.
He threw out a lot of stuff, so we're now looking for a place to store the recycling things, have the hall full of coats again. Ugh.
He lined the door and the walls with sound isolation and he can use his music...as hard as he likes without disturbing anyone.
So you're warned!!!
Posted by: Laane | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 01:28 PM
Your garage must be warmer than ours is right now. And we also have way too many spiders out there. But yours looks great!
Posted by: Heidi | Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 02:46 PM
That looks so nice! It makes me long for a little bit bigger garage. On my list of things to look for if we should ever, in a moment of insanity, decide to trade our very affordable mortgage for one that will put us in debtor's prison, is a mud room.

Great idea in the garage. I'd do that too, if we had a garage. I managed to not figure out how to add a description of my WFMW entry, but it's about coupon organization. I see the link before mine is also about that, so I'll have to go check it out. :D

about your paneling, we had it on the bottom of our downstairs room. we couldn't just take it off so we sanded it down, primed it with Kilz and painted. because I know you have more time on your hands than jobs :)

We do this too in spring, summer and fall. But today? It was in the teens when I got up this morning, and no one wants to put on frozen shoes and coats, so it all winds up in the laundry room.

I love it. It is like a "mud room" that you see in all the magazines for those of us that do not have nice large rooms inside the back door.

I remember when we lived in an 1800 square foot house INCLUDING the garage. 5 kids in 2 bedrooms, and us in the master. Yep, I understand overflowing. I kept trying to figure out how to work everything. I was getting frustrated so I started to pray.
"God you have given us this little house for all 7 of us to live in."
"If this is what You have given to us, then You must have a way to make it work." "So, I need some ideas."
I wonder if God let out a sigh and said, "finally". Regardless the ideas just started flowing. I was amazed at how everything started working. It was as if God wanted me to stop trying to figure everything out on my own and need Him enough to ask for His ideas. I learned a valuable lesson that day that I have not forgotten.
I am new to the blogging world and I see your name on several of the blogs I visit. Seems like you are a veteran.
I am still trying to figure out how to meet people.
Blessings,
Julie

We run a small business from home, every draw in our bedroom is full of stock and even my boys bedroom is full of baby toys that we sell, our front room has two computers and desk and a stamping machine, on top of that we live in a 2 bedroom flat with 2 kids and one cat, so when you say you need space i understand how you feel :)
