When Jenni and I were in Pottery Barn Kids a few weeks ago, I snapped some photos. And then I lost my memory card, which is why I'm just getting around to showing you the pictures.
That's just fabric and/or paper on canvas boards. Doesn't it look so good? Y'all, we could totally do that ourselves, and for a lot less than the wads of cash Pottery Barn charges. Somebody try it!
What a ridiculously cute idea! I may have to try that. Someday.

I think wrapping paper would be great for this project - you can find such adorable paper these days.
Posted by: Alana | Monday, April 14, 2008 at 03:54 PM
I saw them too and have the supplies to make mine ready and waiting. I'm going to try using some old wall paper scraps I have for the birds. I also saw some cute chaulk boards cut into shapes. I think I'll try that next. If you do it yourself its like 1/4 the price or less, plus you can personalize the colors/patterns. I found a recipe for making colored chaulkboard paint (I wanted pink) on Martha Stewart's website.

When I saw those I thought that very same thing!
My 8 y.o. daughter is obsessed with Paris right now (the city, not the heiress) and I was thinking I might be able to do an Eiffel Tower type thing with this concept for her bedroom.
You may have just given me the motivation to really do it!
Happy Monday!

I meant chalk not chaulk. My bad.
Posted by: Pat | Monday, April 14, 2008 at 04:03 PM
I am very amused at your last sentence. It's just what I would have said to end a post like this. But, I'm slowly changing. I do have directions of yours on how to make baby gifts. that's one step closer to being crafty.
Posted by: janet | Monday, April 14, 2008 at 04:13 PM
Ooh, that would be just the thing for my daughter's room, and of course I could customize it in her colors...what a great idea!
If I end up doing it, I'll send you a picture! :-)
Posted by: Jeni | Monday, April 14, 2008 at 04:23 PM
I LOVE this idea. I could really do this, but I'd probably do jungle animals to go with our nursery that will hopefully be in use before too many more months! I'll add the supplies to my shopping list for the fabric store...
Posted by: Amy | Monday, April 14, 2008 at 04:36 PM
Whoever tries it needs to be featured here so I can know about it, see it and then learn and copy. I love it.

***Somebody try it!***
I think that's a great idea for you to try!
We all know you are totally crafty! ;)
giggle...

Congratulations! We love your blog. It´s very beautifful.

Anna Maria Horner is the QUEEN of this kind of craft. She was on Martha Stewart doing it, using fabrics she designed herself. It's very easy to do! There are instructions on the right-hand side of her blog.

Okay. For a minute I thought you were in the magazine and I was awed and confused. Not that I wouldn't put your picture in PBK, but you know...
Posted by: allysha | Monday, April 14, 2008 at 05:19 PM
Those are so cute! I just might try to make them!
Posted by: tiffany McGuigan | Monday, April 14, 2008 at 05:35 PM
Am I the only one who looks at that and thinks "there is no way I could ever do that?!?!" My poor girls, crafty I am not.
Posted by: nottryingforaboy | Monday, April 14, 2008 at 05:43 PM
Our monthly craft night at church is this Friday and I am so going to try one of these. Thanks for the pics and ideas.

Too cute! Thanks for the tip!

Wow! I need some supplies! I could do frogs for my oldest girl, ladybugs for baby girl, and not sure about my son. Those top blocks would be really cute using initials.

I just said on my blog that if I won the Lottery, I'd have PB Kids come decorate my kids' room like the catalog!
I love the look of their products but I cannot give up the money it requires. I am SO cheap....
I think you're right: you have some crafty readers. Someone can make one of these and then do a blogg-giveaway and let ME win.
:)

I am so in on this one. I've got lots of scrap fabric lying around and canvases are $5 or so at Big Lots. Let me fiddle with it for a little bit, and I'll show you my attempts when I won't embarrass myself. : )
Posted by: pam | Monday, April 14, 2008 at 07:04 PM
I think the same thing every time I see one of these. Perhaps even someone as un-crafty as I am could manage to do one or two?
Posted by: Ashleigh (Heart and Home) | Monday, April 14, 2008 at 07:06 PM
I saw a sign at a craft fair that said, "sure you could do it yourself. but would you??"
Posted by: that girl | Monday, April 14, 2008 at 07:13 PM
You go RIGHT ahead. :-)
Posted by: dcrmom | Monday, April 14, 2008 at 07:35 PM
That is really cool! Like a scrap book page for the wall. Imagine putting a little frame on that with a photo.
Posted by: dana | Monday, April 14, 2008 at 07:42 PM
I was just thinking the same thing! All you need to do is cut out the silhouettes and put them on some pretty paper. Lovely idea!
Posted by: Andrea | Monday, April 14, 2008 at 08:07 PM
I am going to try that for sure! How easy is that! Thanks!
Posted by: Andrea | Monday, April 14, 2008 at 08:19 PM
a friend of mine decoupaged really cute scrapbooking paper to canvas, and they look awesome. just an idea!
Posted by: HeresTheDiehl | Monday, April 14, 2008 at 08:20 PM
Oooh! I love PB and PBK, but alas, too expensive for me. If someone makes these, PLEASE post directions for those of us who are craft-challenged, ie, ME!
Posted by: Anna | Monday, April 14, 2008 at 08:44 PM
Clarification... coz I am totally doing this... is the whole thing covered with fabric, or is it painted and then the stuff added on?
Posted by: jen | Monday, April 14, 2008 at 09:12 PM
I have a question that is totally off topic. Last year you had a giveaway for handpainted signs and I was wondering if you had the website of the woman who makes them because I would like to order one. Thanks!
Posted by: Liberty | Monday, April 14, 2008 at 09:15 PM
I do that all the time - see ideas in the store and think, hey I can do that!!! And then I buy the supplies and they sit. And sit... :)
Posted by: Say | Monday, April 14, 2008 at 09:17 PM
I think that very same thing every time I go in to Pottery Barn. Have you ever seen their little square canvases with the letters painted on them (so you can spell kid's names, or whatever)? So simple, so cheap to make and yet priced outrageously!! If I ever have time between blogging and scrapbooking (oh, yeah, and raising 3 kids and running my household)I'm totally going to try it.

I think those birds are actually a rip-off of something I've seen other artists do... I saw a similar craft on Martha and at this link: http://specklednest.blogspot.com/2008/03/tgif-quickiefabric-collage.html
You could absolutely make your own!

I saw those the other day and thought the same thing. I have it on my list of crafty things to try out!
Posted by: jen | Monday, April 14, 2008 at 09:45 PM
My daughter and I watched Anna Maria Horner demonstrate this on Martha STewart, and we've decided to do these for a craft/party favor for her birthday this summer.
They are very cute!

I'm in. I'll send you a picture as soon as I get it done.

That is hilarious! I ripped that page out of the catelog and went on a 10 minute rant to my husband about how I could DO that myself!!
Posted by: Becky | Monday, April 14, 2008 at 10:50 PM
Aww, I love those! I'm going to try it.

Hi Shannon,
I've been reading your blog for over a year so I know you are a fellow Lost watcher. Anyway, my husband showed me this YouTube video and if you haven't seen it, you should! Very funny!

Oh, I love it! I've been trying to come up with some wall art for both my girls' rooms. This just may be my answer.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! Thank you sooo much for posting this - I'm going to make some for my neice! :)

I am constantly amazed at what people will buy at ridiculous prices! I hate to go to places like that because I'm always knocking their stuff! "Oh, I would never pay that. I could make that for $3!" Then I never do, but that's beside the point.

I found this on Martha Stewart the other day:

Cute!

That would be perfect for my baby girl's room. Maybe you should make them and sell them for less. You know, in all your spare time, right? :)
Posted by: fullheartandhands mama | Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at 09:06 AM
OK, I totally think this is a feasible do-it-yourself project. My only question: What do you think is the best method to get the designs (birds, flowers, etc) to attach to the canvas? Doesn't seem like you could sew it. Seems like glue would show through...I know there must be an easy answer, but I have pregnancy brain (at least that's my current excuse). Can someone enlighten? I'd really like to try it for the nursery.
Oh--and for the person who didn't know what to do for her son--I think a train would be adorable, initials would be great, or even trucks/airplanes.

I think PB ripped off artist Anna Marie Horner who had this idea on Martha Stewart not too long ago. A tutorial is here...

I second checking out Anna Maria's site on this. I used her idea and made silhouettes of my boys to give to my MIL for Christmas. It was easy, very quick and turned out great.

Our friends nursery has these additions....I totally agree we could do it ourselves!
